MENTORSHIP SHAPE-UP:  Students meet their instructors for new class of college mentorship program

When UNLV student Meredith Hall missed the deadline by one day to apply for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority’s (LVCVA) inaugural College Mentorship Program last year, she couldn’t wait to apply for the second class, which got underway earlier this month.

Hall and 30 other students will be mentored by local sports marketing leaders and other special events and tourism experts in the six-month program. Students met their mentors during a luncheon Oct. 16 at the Las Vegas Convention Center — the first of several networking events planned.

Based on a sneak peek at a couple of “chapters” from R.U.N, Cirque du Soleil’s new live-action thriller opening Oct. 24 at Luxor, audiences can expect an adrenaline-soaked, fist-throwing romp through a decidedly dark version of Las Vegas and its desert environs. The show promises nonstop, pulse-elevating action in the form of stage combat, death-defying motorcycle stunts, car chases, special effects and pyrotechnics.

So, you know, don’t forget your heart medication — because this isn’t your typical, dreamy Cirque show.

EASY AS 1-2-3, DO-RE-MI: ABC Kids Expo brings juvenile product pros together at Las Vegas Convention Center 

Somebody come and play.

Las Vegas, a haven for all manner of grownup pastimes, will this month turn toward children and babies, welcoming North America’s largest business-to-business juvenile-products trade show.

The ABC Kids Expo — the ABC stands for All Baby & Child — runs Oct. 23-25 at the Las Vegas Convention Center and will feature more than 700 exhibitors occupying 1,600-plus booths (226 for first-time exhibitors) that will cover 500,000 square feet and represent 988 brands. Exhibitors will come from 60 countries. The nonprofit All Baby & Child Corp., based in San Antonio, estimates that 60 percent of retailers and attendees are in the toy, gear, gift, apparel and maternity industry.
