Las Vegas Newswire wins national journalism award
Competing in its first journalism contest since launching in August 2018, Las Vegas Newswire was awarded a first-place honor in the national Society for Features Journalism (SFJ) competition.
The story, headlined “This is a Shtick-Up!”, was an interview with Vegas comic legend Shecky Greene, written by managing editor Steve Bornfeld. It was posted when Las Vegas Newswire launched on Aug. 1, 2018.
The story tied for first-place with an article by the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman in the category of arts and entertainment writing for news outlets with a circulation of up to 90,000 readers.
Here are the judges’ comments:
“Bornfeld captures the frenetic energy and stream-of-consciousness style of Shecky Greene, and readers feel as though they’re in the room with the comic. Bornfeld’s instincts for mirroring Greene’s style results in an entertaining snapshot. A line early in the story captures the approach: ‘Chitchats with Shecky Greene demand massive stockpiles of those percussive flourishes (BA-RUMP-BUMP!) that could punctuate Shecky punch lines whooshing toward you in tsunami waves.’”
Winning publications in various categories and circulation groups also included: The New York Times, Washington Post, The New Yorker, the Los Angeles Times, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, St. Louis Dispatch, Dallas Morning News, Miami Herald, Kansas City Star, Baltimore Sun, San Francisco Chronicle, Philadelphia Inquirer, Houston Chronicle, GQ and USA Today.
Las Vegas Newswire is produced by the Las Vegas News Bureau, a department of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
